  • Profile

Waswa Simon is a PhD researcher working on project LitDem – Strategic Climate Litigation’s Direct and Indirect Consequences for Democracies led by Prof. Dr. C. Eckes. Focusing on four national jurisdictions that is, Germany, France, the United Kingdom and Netherlands and internationational jurisdiction i.e., the European Court of Human rights, the project seeks to establish the missing theoretical framework for the interrelationship between Strategic Climate Litigation (SCL) and democratic processes. He seeks to coopt the concept of future generations as the entry point into interrogating the role of international and EU law in the "jigsaw puzzle" of SCL and its wider implications for democracy. He holds a Bachelor of Laws from Makerere University, a postgraduate diploma in legal practice from the Law Development Centre and an LL.M in environmental law from Stockholm University. He is a member of the Ugandan and East African Bars, the Uganda Law Society and East African Law Society, respectively. He also serves as a member of the East African Law Society's Environmental Law Committee.

His research interests span the legal fields covering climate change , biodiversity, hazardous waste and their interplay with the concepts of human rights, democratic governance and the North-South asymmetries.

Besides the project, he has served as a supervisor and coordinator of the Amsterdam European Law Clinic under the auspices of the Amsterdam Law Clinics.
